SIFF Cinema and Festa Italiana dance together this weekend! That's amore!
Saturday at 10AM the 21st Festa Italiana gets underway at Seattle Center! And it's FREE! An inexpensive way to have lot's of fun! There's lots going on (grape stomping, a Bocce tournament, cooking demonstrations) but here's a couple of really special highlights: At 3PM SIFF Cinema is featuring a FREE screening of the great Fellini film I Vitelloni! At 4PM in the Seattle Center Pavilion the Seattle Opera will present a live preview of "Figaro" by Mozart. Afterwards enjoy a snack! How about pizza, pasta, prosciutto, salumi, focaccia, gelato, espresso and more! Yum! And then as Festa Italiana wraps up, head back to SIFF Cinema by 7:30PM and take an amazing cinematic journey to China via the film Still Life (this screening is not free).
Sunday 10AM brings Day 2 of Festa Italiana and another day of FREE fun! The highlights? At 2pm in the Seattle Center Pavilion the Early Music Guild presents a preview of their upcoming production of Monteverdi's "La Favola d'Orfeo". At 3pm SIFF Cinema is screening another Italian gem called Mafioso (for FREE!). At 4pm, also in the Seattle Center Pavilion, Bellevue Opera presents previews of their upcoming production of Puccini's "Tosca." And after Festa Italiana wraps up, don't forget that the fantastic Chinese film Still Life also screens (not free) at SIFF Cinema 1pm and 7:30pm on Sunday, so don't miss an opportunity to catch this great film while you're at Seattle Center!
Sooo...what other 35mm gems are in town showing on a big screen (where they belong) this week? SAM's Film-Noir series begins Thursday with Storm Warning but the series is already SOLD OUT. Sometimes single tickets are available. The Northwest Film Forum is showing it's final early Milos Forman film (a NEW 35mm print): Taking Off which plays on Tuesday & Wednesday ONLY. NWFF also brings a new 35mm print of a highly regarded documentary on the art of painting called (surprisingly) Painters Painting. I wonder if the fuzzy haired guy from PBS is mentioned. He's my favorite painter. And for Friday & Saturday late night fun, you just can't go wrong with 35mm prints of Repo Man (Grand Illusion 11pm) and The Host (Egyptian midnight).
There are 2 return arrivals of SIFF 2008 films this week: XXY and Choke.
